I have seen a resurgence of the Big Plastic Butterfly Clip adorning the heads of many women. Research tells me that they first came on the scene in the mid 90’s. I embraced the trend back then since I had very long curls and young children. The 2 didn’t often go well together and the butterfly clip allowed ease and convenience in getting my hair out of the way. And I thought it was a good look. Everyone was wearing them! But now, as I see them being worn once again, I’m not so sure anymore. What I really don’t get is why they are being positioned to pull up the hair near the base of your head so it creates an odd horizontal part about midway on your skull. It’s just weird-looking. I don’t think I’ll be hopping on board with that look.
Thinking about this recurring trend made me consider some of the styles in my past and how I cringe today when I see pictures of myself offering proof that I actually dressed that way. It’s frightening! What on earth was I thinking? There was the “mod” look, big pointy collars, HUGE bell bottoms, big paisley prints, Farrah Fawcett hair, and oh my, I’m haunted by a picture of myself wearing a pair of kelly GREEN pants. And let’s just say that when BIG Texas hair was in…..I totally rocked it! Thankfully, I moved out of those phases.
The other trend that I’m not sold on is the padded hips. Has everyone seen the commercials on TV with the padded panties? Apparently Pippa Middleton and all of the Kardashian sisters have a little to do with this latest fad. But seriously, what woman wants to look like she has a bigger butt? I’ve yet to meet her. I know that a well-rounded derriere is the “in” thing (a million lunges and squats down, only a billion more to go) but women rarely wish for extra width in that region of their bodies. I could be wrong, but I don’t see this one going mainstream. Sorry Pippa!
There will always be new styles, colors, cuts, and hemlines and I think it’s fun to try them out. We women get a little bored wearing the same things over and over again and it feels adventurous to try something that seems a little different or edgy. But be aware that every trend is not for everyone! Know what looks good on your body and ask your realfriends to be honest with you about how you look. Understand that the truth hurts sometimes. Maybe, just maybe, the newest “look” isn’t for you or (ghast) you’ve gotten too old to pull it off!
While we may look back at how we embraced fashions that have come and gone and feel kind of silly that we got sucked into whatever was in vogue, at least we have moved on. Right! It could be worse. If you look back at yourself in the 80’s and 90’s and you still dress the same today and wear your hair the same way, perhaps it’s time for a makeover. One more thing to consider, check with your friends and ask them why they haven’t at least hinted around to you that a new look could be fun. Because if you can’t count on your bestie to tell you, who will?
A little PS here: Cindy tells me that I AM a candidate for the padded panties! Did I say that’s what besties are for?
